Cycling in Bali: An unusual adventure altogether [Part 1]

As we all know about Bali, an exotic destination for lavish holidays, great night outs, gorgeous looking alcohol, even gorgeous/generous ladies and if not all also a fair enough place for pilgrimage. Off course I forgot to mention a surfers and water sports enthusiast paradise offering some of the best/cheapest/adventurous surfing and diving experiences.

Little to everyone's knowledge, Bali can be a ideal place for medium level hikes and a-la-carte cycling experiences. Summer of 2014 my time in Indonesia for about a period of 2-3 weeks was nothing but an escape from my first job, merely to get distressed and avoid hefty working hours for a short while. Likewise my tour to other countries I pretty much wanted to enjoy and taste everything this tiny country of several island had to offer. And rightly so I was going pretty well for the first quarter of my trip.

It was in Sanur while walking on a fine evening through the main street of the pretty little town I ended up chatting with a cool guy of roughly my age. He was one of the many tourist agents who runs a small time tourist experience business in competition to hundred others on that same street. "Highly competitive man ain't it", I said. He reverted " Oh well I just want to be unique, thats the only way you go ahead here". " So what have you got unique for me today", I asked. The main street is a highly commercial street which leads to the main beach of Sanur. It is packed with luxury resorts and small time travel companies, the competition for all these businesses is fierce as everyone of them scream their lungs out in order to get as many clients as possible.

Living upto the unique word he offered me a cycling trip which en-routes way up from the Kintamani volcano and goes all the way through the artistic city of Ubud and back to the town. Not to be forgotten the included banana breakfast at the Kintamani Volcanoes which was claimed to be healthy. This guy had an association with the Bali Bintang Tour which runs some of the coolest mountain bicycling experiences throughout Bali.

Morning 7.45 am I got picked up from my hostel in Sanur where I was later joined by an extended Dutch family. The family consisted of husband, wife, father, mother, sister, her friends and two awesome sporty kids.

The drive was brisk but was yet very dodgy. Once reached, we had our breakfast at the Kintamani volcano. Banana breakfast it was, suppose to be very healthy and nutritious, an Indonesian thing.

We began our cycling from Kintamani volcano, all the way down hill, till we reached our first stop a coffee plantation, this is the place where we had a chance to taste the wide range of  coffees that Indonesia offers.
